After the United States won the gold medal in basketball at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Jason Kidd, an NBA basketball superstar and starter for the US basketball team, decided he would come through on a generous promise he made to Elaine Wynn, the casino owners wife.
Many had speculated that this move was the paying off of some huge outstanding gambling debt Kidd had at the casino, which wouldn’t be too surprising considering the recent scandal with former NBA superstar and commentator Charles Barkley owing a ridiculous sum to a Las Vegas Casino. However, Kidd made it very clear, and nobody has disputed it, that he had promised to give Wynn the gold medal because of how Elaine had treated him and his family while they stayed at the hotel for weeks at a time.
“Last summer, we stayed at the Wynn for a lifetime, close to three weeks,” Kidd said. “We [Kidd and Elaine] met at a banquet, we got to talking, and she really understands the game. I told her I’d make a deal with her, that if we won the gold medal, I’d give it to her. She thought I was kidding. But I told her I had one already, and the way they treated us at the Wynn, it was the least I could do.”
Nobody’s quite sure why someone would do such a nice thing like this, but I’m sure Wynn will be treating Kidd very nicely from here on out. I don’t think he’ll have to pay for a suite ever again.
